Her Story
About Sophia
Sophia Alvarez is a graphic designer and advertising professional based in the field of creative and advertising design, with two years of hands-on experience building her craft through academic study, campus leadership, and community-driven projects. She earned her Associate of Arts and Sciences in Advertising Graphic Design at Middlesex College, where she made the Dean's List, earned a Letter of Commendation, and received the Creative Excellence in Advertising Graphic Design Award. Beyond the classroom, Alvarez has taken on meaningful leadership and volunteer roles that showcase her range as a creative. She serves as Vice President of the Media Arts Division for Kappa Pi International Art Honor Society and is an active member of Phi Theta Kappa and the Digital Creators Club's graphic design team. Her volunteer work includes managing social media for a Peruvian cafeteria, where she planned weekly content, led photoshoots, and built genuine engagement with the brand's audience, as well as curating and assembling art galleries for fellow media arts and design students and designing flyers for campus exhibitions. She also contributed her design skills to a Latin student organization, supporting their outreach through social media and promotional materials, and volunteered at the Middlesex Teen Arts Festival in 2025. At the core of Alvarez's work is a deep commitment to authenticity and cultural pride. She approaches design as more than a profession — it's a form of personal expression and a way to process life's experiences, one she credits, alongside her family's support, as the foundation of her success. Fluent in both English and Spanish, she often draws on her Hispanic heritage to bring genuine, culturally resonant perspectives into her creative work.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Sophia
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to myself and to the unwavering support of my family. Art has always been a tool that inspires me and helps me navigate life's challenges. Through my work, I'm able to express my feelings openly, and I see that expression as a safe space I've built for myself.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice I've received is to always believe in myself and to put my heart, soul, and mind into everything I do, giving my full effort every time. I've also learned that art can be interpreted in many different ways, and that doesn't mean I'm doing something wrong — it simply means my perspective is valid.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would tell them to always trust themselves and never underestimate their own creativity. Make sure you're giving 100% in everything you do, and enjoy the process without letting pressure take over. It's also important to stay grounded and aware of what you want for your life and career.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The rise of AI is one of the biggest challenges designers face today, as many of us worry about being replaced by machines. At the same time, I believe that design will always require a human touch, so we won't be fully replaced — though we are being challenged to continuously improve and sharpen our skills. The wide range of creative perspectives in this industry can also create pressure and a tendency to compare ourselves to others, which is something I'm learning to navigate.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Authenticity and staying loyal to my principles and values matter most to me. I strive to be true to myself and to show who I really am, both personally and professionally — including proudly showcasing my Hispanic culture and roots in my creative work.
