Her Story

About Sophie

Sophie Tate serves as a client entertainment professional at Channel Factory, an ad tech company based in New York, where she oversees events for clients across North and Latin America. She brings 10 years of experience in the events industry, having begun her career working weddings immediately after high school while attending Santa Barbara City College for three and a half years studying pre-med. Tate later transitioned to Autumn Communications, where she managed experiential events for three and a half years before joining Channel Factory. She has volunteered with the MS Foundation of New York and the Ulcerative Colitis Foundation to organize galas and corporate events. Tate attributes her success to always saying yes to opportunities, pushing herself through challenging tasks despite lacking a formal degree in the field, and overcoming imposter syndrome to build independence and courage. She values being a self-starter and self-motivated in her work, along with loyalty and optimism in her personal life, which helps her navigate the unpredictable nature of events. Her advice to others includes learning tasks thoroughly before delegating and embracing networking or new experiences to foster self-discovery.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Sophie

01What do you attribute your success to?

I think always saying yes, and pushing myself to maybe take a task that feels challenging or too big to handle, and using my resources to figure out the best way to move forward. Coming into this industry with no degree, I faced imposter syndrome or fear, and fighting through that built independence and courage.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

If you can't do it, don't ask someone else to do it. Always learn and pass that on to be able to teach where you can.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Always say yes if it's a networking opportunity or doing something that's a little out of your comfort zone, say yes and try it once, and if you hate it, it's gonna be an hour or a day of your life, and now you know, and you don't have to go back to that. That is the only way to really have that type of self-discovery within our careers.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge in our field right now is events are really the first thing to go when a budget is cut. So finding ways to prove ROI is really important but also a big challenge. How to bring value into events and really prove that that value is there is something that's been my main focus this year.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

In work, I really value being a self-starter and self-motivated. I like to jump on a task or even get ahead of work to try to predict what might need to be done in the future. In personal life, I really value loyalty and the ability to be optimistic no matter the situation. That has benefited me in my professional career a lot because events are often unpredictable.
