Her Story

About Sowmya

Sowmya’s journey into finance began long before she formally chose it as a career. From a young age, she demonstrated a natural instinct for identifying value—whether negotiating better deals on household furniture or finding ways to save on everyday groceries. What started as an intuitive ability to recognize cost efficiencies gradually evolved into a passion for financial strategy and analysis. This early mindset laid the foundation for her transition into Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A), where she could channel her strengths into driving meaningful business impact.

She began her professional career in audit, completing a rigorous three-year internship that sharpened her attention to detail and financial discipline. Transitioning into commercial finance, Sowmya joined Shell, where she advanced from a financial analyst to a senior financial analyst role. During her time there, she played a key role in forecasting and planning for a $1 billion retail business while contributing to initiatives that delivered significant bottom-line savings. Her work went beyond traditional reporting—she collaborated cross-functionally with business teams, influenced pricing strategies, and identified process gaps that resulted in over a million dollars in value creation and reduced leakage. For Sowmya, FP&A became more than numbers; it became a platform to influence decisions and shape business outcomes.

A chartered accountant from India, equivalent to a CPA in the United States, Sowmya brings over seven years of experience in FP&A and Business Intelligence. Her path into the corporate world was not without challenges, but the mentorship she received—particularly from a manager who encouraged her to speak up and share her insights—played a pivotal role in her growth and confidence. Now stepping into a finance manager role at a highly regarded organization, Sowmya remains driven by her passion for impact and strategic thinking. She aspires to continue advancing in her field, with a clear goal of becoming an FP&A Director within the next five years.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Sowmya

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would attribute my success to my mother, Anita, because coming from a family which is Orthodox, it was never easy for me to come out of it, but her encouragement is something that kept me alive and kept me going all this time. Even when I came back to the US, it was never easy. It was their encouragement - my mother and my family - which made me pursue the things that I want consistently and shaped my mindset. Their support has been the foundation of everything I've accomplished.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

If someone is coming into financial planning, my advice would be that influence doesn't come from authority, it comes from insight, consistency, and the courage to ask right questions. Keep up yourself and talk whenever you have insights, and don't be discouraged. Especially in FP&A, it's never easy to influence without authority, but you have to, because being a finance person, you have to work with a lot of different teams and tell them what the numbers are actually saying. You need to be confident in your career, and it's okay to be a lifelong learner and to ask questions.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me are being grounded, ownership, empathy, and continuous learning. I really like to take responsibility for everything and keep continuously learning, being naturally curious, always trying to improve myself, whether it's understanding the business better or developing new life skills. There's one quote I always think of when introducing myself: in the world where you can be anything, be kind, because that comes back to you in any way or the other, whether it be in things that we wouldn't even notice. Just try to be kind, because there are a lot of things that everyone is going through. A little bit of kindness goes a long way, and people may forget your face, but they'll never forget the way you make them feel or the way you treat them.
