What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to discipline, accountability, and time management. I've been in project management for so long, and time management is absolutely important to me. I hold teams accountable across the organization. I'm in a unique role where I'm not just accountable for my team, but I also provide accountability across different departments because I work with finance, legal, and so many different areas where IT has a component. Holding those teams accountable for their delivery has been key to my success.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've ever received is to always put yourself in the shoes of the customer when you're delivering value. The customer is very important, and you need to think from their perspective. You may deliver on time and on budget, but that may not necessarily satisfy the customer in the overall value that you're bringing. So always wear the hat of the customer and remember that the customer is always right. This is advice I'll carry throughout my career.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would say discipline is very important. Always start small. No work is small or large. You need to start small if you want to really be successful in the long term. Don't underestimate the value of beginning with smaller tasks and responsibilities, because starting small will lead to bigger things.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Alignment is the biggest challenge in my field right now. Providing alignment and clarity is what I would say, because I have to work with leaders across the organization, and sometimes they have strong personalities and differences in opinions. I always stay close to the data and provide insights using data, so it's not my opinion but what the data is saying. Alignment and clarity is something that I constantly work to achieve.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity is absolutely the most important value to me. Everything else will fail if you don't have integrity, so I would place that high. The other value that's very important to me is empathy. In the project management world, we call people resources, but I try to stay away from that because there are humans who come to work, and empathy is absolutely important. Treating your team with empathy is very important to me. So I would call out those two values: integrity and empathy.
