Her Story
About Sridevi
I have my master's in biochemistry from India, and I was working in research there, mostly focusing on infectious diseases. When I came to the US, I was a stay-at-home mom for 10 years. During that time, I healed my own severe allergies through lifestyle changes, and I also healed my daughter's colitis through an elimination diet while breastfeeding her. When my kids were older, I went back to school and took my nutrition degree in Memphis, Tennessee. I finished my internship at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. I worked as a clinical dietitian in hospitals for 3 years, but I wasn't very happy because the acute care model didn't suit me. I felt like it was a fixed program that doesn't help for a dynamic body. That's when I started studying functional nutrition, and my biochemistry background really came into play. I was able to tie the biochemistry with the nutrition together and customize the diet based on the nutritional biochemistry of a person. It was more of a personalized nutrition I started doing, which I saw people started thriving with. I recently finished my specialty for the Medical Academy of Pediatric Special Needs and became a fellow there. Now I feel like I can do functional medicine with adults and pediatrics specific to mental health, and I'm able to get to the root cause and not just give a band-aid treatment.

Ten minutes with Sridevi
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the universe and to being able to help the underprivileged people. I'm not very business-oriented, but I'm very service-oriented. I'm able to have that freedom now where if somebody's not able to afford something, then money doesn't come in my way to give my treatment. That freedom is the biggest achievement I've done so far.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've ever received is to keep doing what you're doing and don't worry about what you're going to get. Just keep doing.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
If you're thinking about entering into nutrition, one thing I want to let you know is that food has to be seen as medicine, that's very important. That thought has to get into your mind. And a holistic approach is very, very, very important as and when they do their job. Sometimes collaboration is very important because we have to honor and appreciate how other disciplines also have to play a role in healing a person. So collaboration is also important. It has to be a teamwork, rather than just one person. And basically, I feel like if you are coming into this field, you always look forward to heal the people, and heal yourself from that.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge I would say is the consistency of retaining the business, because that awareness for the holistic approach has to be given every day and it has to be reached to so many people. That awareness is not fully there. A lot of people wanted easy methods of healing. They don't want to really get into the root cause of a thing, so just to make them understand that takes some time. Getting them into that rhythm of being consistent and participating, just getting the rhythm itself is a big challenge in my field. But once you get them into the rhythm, yes, it just keeps flowing. As for opportunities, there are tons of opportunities, especially if you are in an integrative model. I feel like you can work from your own niches, because there are a thousand niches that you can explore into this nutrition field itself. Just understand the core of it, and then just get yourself narrowed down to a niche. That's a great opportunity.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I'm no different in my work and my personal life. I'm all the same. My values are about abiding by the integrity of what I say. That's my topmost value. I practice what I preach, and that's one of the best values that I have.
