What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the encouragement of my late father, Michael Walker, who pushed me to strive for my goals and advocate for others, as well as the support of my mother and greatest supporter, Betty Mason.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
A pause is just that, a temporary pause to reset and realign, you have hit play and trust the process. Failure is never final, it's a lesson and opportunity for growth.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Faith over Fear, adversity is meant to be conquered. Growth is uncomfortable yet rewarding, it's required for elevation. Despite the challenges, always operate with integrity and resilience. Discouragement will occur, but be encouraged by the change, difference, and impact your work will yield for marginalized and disenfranchised communities.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
We are in a turbulent and broken political climate where classism champions a capitalist and supremacist system. Women of color are consistently being targeted as a perceived threat, yet we are relentlessly operating as heroes championing for justice and equity. As a Black woman with a doctorate, (only 3% of us), The odds are stacked against me, yet I remain dedicated to the mission and my purpose.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me in my work and personal life are faith, community, and connection—whether teaching youth and college ministry at church, creating memorable experiences with family and friends, staying active, or pursuing my love of reading, writing, and cool sneakers.
