Ten minutes with Stacey
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to perseverance, lifelong learning, and the determination to overcome challenges. My journey from high school dropout to PhD candidate and program director reflects my commitment to growth and education. I began my career as a dental assistant in 1997, became a dental hygienist in 2003, earned my bachelor’s degree in 2008, and later completed a master’s in educational leadership. Since November 2020, I have been passionate about leading a dental hygiene program and inspiring future dental professionals.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I received came from Dr. Paul Bottcarelli, who encouraged me to pursue dentistry despite my learning challenges. He reminded me that my unique way of thinking—understanding things upside down and backwards—was actually an advantage and a quality that suited dentistry. His encouragement helped me recognize the value of my perspective and gave me the confidence to pursue my career path.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this industry is to believe in themselves and remember that it is never too late to start or change direction. Life can be challenging, and people may not always be supportive, but with hard work, dedication, and resilience, you can build a career you truly love. Stay committed to your goals, embrace your journey, and never let obstacles define your potential.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges and opportunities in my field right now is being in a new and evolving role as a program director while opening a new dental hygiene school. Building a program from the ground up requires adaptability, strong leadership, and a commitment to creating a positive learning environment. At the same time, it is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of dental education and support the next generation of dental professionals.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are authenticity, resilience, and making a positive impact. I believe in sharing my story to inspire others and showing that challenges can be overcome with determination and purpose. I am grateful to have a career I truly love while embracing my role as a single mom. Outside of work, I value quality time with my son and family, especially enjoying simple moments like fishing together.
