Her Story

About Stacy

Stacy Monahan Tucker is an attorney and Founding Partner of Monahan Tucker Law, P.C., a national law firm focused on ERISA and insurance bad faith litigation. Based in the Seattle area, she represents white-collar professionals, executives, and other policyholders in disability, life, long-term care, and catastrophic property insurance matters. Stacy brings approximately 25 years of experience in insurance litigation, including two decades representing insurance companies before transitioning to plaintiff-side representation.

Her practice focuses on helping clients navigate denied or terminated disability benefits, administrative appeals, ERISA litigation, insurance coverage disputes, and bad faith claims. Drawing on her extensive experience representing insurers, Stacy understands the strategies and tactics commonly used by insurance companies and applies that perspective to advocating for policyholders. Her firm works with clients nationwide, with particular attention to cases involving employers headquartered on the West Coast and the potential advantages of litigating within the Ninth Circuit.

Stacy earned her J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School and her B.A. in History and Sociology from the University of Chicago. In addition to her legal practice, she has served on the boards of organizations supporting people with disabilities and participates in professional and community organizations. Her professional philosophy emphasizes treating others with kindness and approaching challenging situations with curiosity rather than assumptions. She has also been recognized by Best Lawyers and Super Lawyers for her work in ERISA, insurance, and employee benefits law.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Stacy

01What do you attribute your success to?

Hard work and a little bit of luck. There are far too many people out there who work hard and don't ever get a break that works for them. But most people, I think, with hard work and the willingness to put themselves out there, are going to be able to continue to prove themselves and be successful.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The confidence of a mediocre white man. That really resonated with me. It's like, yes, yes. You are absolutely right, and so that is something that I bring up when I'm questioning myself when I'm dealing with something complicated and difficult and wondering about, am I out of my depth. Would another guy with a background not nearly as strong as me ask himself that?

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I encourage people to get a strong base in what they're doing, and then go out on their own. I think I spent way too long not really realizing that I could do this myself. Women especially, I think, are very socialized to question if they know enough. And the simple answer is yes. Yes, you do. Go out and try what you can, as soon as you have a solid basis in the basic understanding of your field, whatever that field is.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are kindness, respect, and curiosity. I believe in treating everyone the way I would want to be treated, including colleagues, opposing counsel, and clients. I try to approach every interaction with empathy and an open mind, seeking to understand the bigger picture rather than reacting with anger or making assumptions.
