01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received was to recognize and pursue opportunities that aligned with my professional interests and long-term growth. Early in my career, shortly after graduate school, I was working as a publications and marketing assistant when an editorial position became available at a neighboring museum. Although my supervisor valued my contributions and did not want to lose me, she encouraged me to apply for the position because she recognized that it was a natural next step for my career. Her support taught me the importance of embracing opportunities for growth, even when that required stepping outside of my comfort zone, and I have carried that lesson with me throughout my career.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the writing, communications, and publishing industry is to speak up for yourself and confidently advocate for your ideas, contributions, and career growth. Be assertive and pursue opportunities, while maintaining professionalism, respect, and good judgment in every interaction. Most importantly, take pride in producing high-quality work and building a reputation for reliability and excellence. In today’s environment of social media, texting, and digital communication, it can be easy to become less intentional with how we communicate, so I encourage young professionals to remain thoughtful, polished, and professional in every message and conversation.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge in my field right now is the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, which is transforming the editorial, publishing, and writing industries and changing how content is created and evaluated. At the same time, I see significant opportunities in being able to use technology thoughtfully while continuing to provide the human judgment, creativity, accuracy, and an editorial perspective that quality communications require.

One of the greatest advantages of my freelance career is the flexibility it provides, allowing me to manage my schedule, choose projects that align with my interests and expertise, and collaborate with a diverse range of people and organizations. I particularly value the relationships I have developed through my work and the opportunity to contribute to projects that I find meaningful and engaging.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me in my work are accuracy, professionalism, and accountability. I take pride in producing high-quality writing, meeting deadlines, and representing every client, organization, or institution I work with as effectively and accurately as possible. I believe that how I communicate reflects the people and organizations I represent, so I strive to approach every project with care, integrity, and attention to detail.

In my personal life, family is especially important to me. As a single mother, I value being present and supportive of my son, including spending time supporting his involvement in basketball, track, and his other interests like fishing and hiking .
