About Stefanie
After earning my bachelors in nursing and completing the ROTC program through Auburn University, I commissioned as an officer in the Air Force as a Registered Nurse. One of the highlights of my military career was precepting the first Afghan nursing class in Bagram, Afghanistan. Before then, they didn't really have nurses in hospitals in Afghanistan. Patients had to rely on housekeeping or janitors who somewhat monitored the patients overnight when doctors weren't present. The Afghan nurses in training were also affected by the Taliban in some capacity- one person lost an eye from an explosion, another their spouse was killed by the Taliban. These brave students wanted to fight back and become nurses for their countrymen. So we trained the first nursing group, and I'm so proud of that program and hope it continues to thrive today.
Later my career took me through many clinics and hospitals, gaining experience in a variety of settings. I’m currently working in an outpatient endoscopy clinic in California. When I’m not in the healthcare setting I spend a lot of my time in community outreach, from free vaccine clinics to food banks to . Learning the hard way, work-life balance is so critical. You don't want to sacrifice your family for your career, but you also don't want to sacrifice your career for family. Especially for women, we have different burdens.
