Her Story

About Stephanie

Stephanie Anderson serves as Program Director for single men in homeless shelters under the Department of Homeless Services in Brooklyn, NY. She began her leadership career in 2006 as a safety supervisor at the same shelter where she once lived after overcoming 10 years of homelessness and substance abuse. Anderson has progressed through roles including security supervisor and program director positions serving families, adults, and domestic violence survivors. Academically, she earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Walden University along with a degree in security management, followed by a master's in teaching. She is currently completing a master's in Christian leadership, with graduation planned for March of next year, and is a minister in training who teaches Sunday school. Anderson attributes her success to being highly motivated and challenged, aiming to be an example for others while pointing to a higher power for encouragement. She advises women entering the field that the time is now to create ideas based on personal examples and share struggles and successes to inspire those without direction.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to being highly motivated and challenged. I want to be an example to someone else and always point to a higher power that we can lean on to be encouraged and motivated.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I didn't receive specific advice but learned by observing the lifestyle I wanted and encouraging myself through spiritual intervention to do anything and not stay without elevation or motivation.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The time is now. Create ideas based on examples of my life and share my struggles and successes to other women who may be still struggling or don't have a direction or purpose in life.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Opportunities include aiming to become vice president at my agency. Challenges include struggling to find an apartment again while remaining strong-minded.
