About Stephanie
Stephanie Gohring-Svendsen is a seasoned workforce development leader and public sector executive serving as the Deputy Director for Workforce Operations at the Oregon Employment Department. In this role, she oversees operations for Oregon's 37 workforce centers, guiding an executive leadership team and hundreds of employees dedicated to connecting individuals and businesses with employment and workforce resources across the state. With nearly two decades of experience in workforce development, she has built a reputation for operational excellence, strategic leadership, and fostering collaborative partnerships that strengthen Oregon's workforce system.
Stephanie's career with the Oregon Employment Department spans more than 15 years, during which she has advanced through a series of leadership positions, including Field Manager, Northwest Area Manager, Portland Metro Area Manager, and ultimately Deputy Director. Her expertise encompasses workforce operations, Title I program administration, business analysis, performance management, strategic planning, policy implementation, and organizational leadership. Prior to entering public service, she spent nearly nine years as a Branch Manager with U.S. Bank and later served as an Area Manager for the SMART Reading Program, where she further developed her management, community engagement, and team-building skills. She studied Business Accounting at the University of Washington, providing a strong business foundation that has complemented her leadership throughout her career.
Beyond her operational accomplishments, Stephanie is recognized for her people-centered leadership philosophy. She consistently advocates for empathy, accountability, employee recognition, professional growth, and work-life balance, believing that effective leadership is rooted in kindness, trust, and high standards. Her commitment to education and community service extends beyond her professional responsibilities, including a decade of service on a local school board and active involvement with workforce and community organizations throughout Oregon. Passionate about developing strong teams and creating meaningful opportunities for both employees and employers, Stephanie continues to champion initiatives that improve workforce outcomes while supporting the well-being and success of those she leads.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I've always had a really strong support system, my family, good friend group, and good health. It's important to prioritize physical and mental health, especially with a demanding job.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
You can't control somebody else, you can only control your actions and how you handle things. Also, when spending state money, justify it as if it would be on the front page of the Oregonian.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Give yourself grace and ask lots of questions. It takes time and patience, you will make mistakes and fail, learn to overcome those failures and cope.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Kindness, patience, integrity, and transparency are most important. What I say and do is consistent, and I have nothing to hide.
