Stephanie Gonzalez is a dedicated public servant and City Council Member in Converse, Texas, currently serving her second term after being elected three years ago. With a career spanning law enforcement, legal work, and community leadership, she brings a diverse and practical perspective to public office. Stephanie began her career in 1999 as a state trooper with the Indiana State Capitol Police, where she served on the executive detail for Governor Frank and Judy O’Bannon. Her early exposure to government and public service laid the foundation for her long-standing commitment to serving others.

After transitioning from law enforcement, Stephanie worked as a paralegal and remained closely connected to civic engagement by supporting local political campaigns. Following her relocation to Texas with her husband, she became actively involved in her community in Converse, initially assisting others in their campaigns before ultimately stepping forward to run for office herself. In addition to her role on city council, she serves on the Board of Trustees and Finance Committee for the Canyon Regional Water Authority and previously acted as a liaison for Planning and Zoning, further demonstrating her commitment to regional collaboration and responsible growth.

At the heart of Stephanie’s work is a deep dedication to people and service. She is especially passionate about supporting children in the foster care system, leading initiatives that provide essential items and dignity to those entering care. Her service is both professional and personal, as she is also an adoptive parent within her own family. Known for her hands-on approach, Stephanie continues to stay closely connected to her community—whether through public service, volunteer efforts, or her everyday work—always guided by a strong belief in showing up for others and making a meaningful difference.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a strong commitment to serving others and staying deeply connected to my community. My background in public safety and years of exposure to the political environment gave me a solid foundation, but it’s really the relationships I’ve built and the people I’ve worked alongside that have shaped my path. I believe in showing up, staying engaged, and consistently doing the work to support those around me.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges right now is the lack of awareness and resources for children entering the foster care system. Programs like Boysville do incredible work, but many people don’t fully realize the level of need. At the same time, this presents a meaningful opportunity for communities to step up—through partnerships, donation drives, and increased awareness—to provide better support and care for these children.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide me are service to others, strong community connection, and ensuring dignity and comfort for vulnerable children and families. Everything I do is centered around helping people and making sure no one feels overlooked or unsupported. I believe even small acts of care can make a lasting impact, and that’s something I carry into both my work and my personal life.
