Her Story

About SU

I started selling Avon when I was young to help pay for college, where I studied journalism. Life took me through different chapters - marriage, moving away, divorce, and raising three daughters on my own. I worked for the airlines in the complaint department for a while. In 2010, I faced cancer and couldn't go back to my airline job during recovery. I didn't like sitting home doing nothing, so I decided to sell Avon again. This time was different - I had a good mentor who helped me learn how to sell and build a team. It became a challenge to me, getting more people underneath me, and I've been in leadership ever since. Around 2008, I started my baking business, Susie Hermine's European Sweets. My parents were born in Austria, my grandparents in Hungary, and I still have first cousins in Europe. I've been baking Austrian and Hungarian cookies all my life - traditional recipes passed down through generations. My daughter asked me one time if I ever thought about selling them, so I started with the cottage law and began selling at events, flea markets, and parties. What started as fun has turned into something meaningful. I'm supposed to be retired, but I keep going because I love what I do. Twice or three times a year, I do fundraisers for the Safe House, where I donate Avon products like lotions and shampoos to women and children who often have nothing but the clothes on their backs. My first marriage was wonderful until it wasn't - he found somebody else and became very abusive. I felt I could relate to these women at the Safe House, so this became something I should do.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with SU

01What do you attribute your success to?

I had a good mentor who came and helped me, teaching me how to sell and giving me good advice. Avon also has things you can learn on the computer that tell you how to sell. It just kind of developed into something - I really didn't have any desire to do all this stuff at first, but it happened and it became a challenge to me. The more I got, and more people underneath me, it became a fun thing to do. I also feel like I'm doing something to help other people through my fundraisers for the Safe House, and that gives me purpose.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I just tell everybody, you know, you're not going to know what you're capable of doing until you do it. And if you don't fail, it's just probably meant that you're not meant to do that, so try something else. That's how I look at it. You're not really a failure in anything, but maybe that part is not meant for you, you know?
