Her Interview

Ten minutes with Sue

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the people around me in each place that I've worked that supported me, that gave me opportunities to grow and to fail and to learn, and saw potential in me to help nurture my career. Also my own self-determination to just want to be a valuable contributing member of society. My mom was a huge influence; she was always supportive and validating.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

When managing people, always show up for them. And if you have to cancel a meeting because something comes up, always reschedule. Showing people that you're available to them is so important.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't rush it. Don't feel like you're ready to be the boss after doing this for 2 years. Every industry, you should do every job within that industry before you assume a leadership role. Get as much experience as you can doing different roles in career services to find out which area you really like the most. Take your time. There's no rush to be the grown-up in the room.
