Her Story

About Sue

I have been a nurse for 33 years, starting my career as a direct care nurse in the critical care area. Over the years, I evolved into charge nurse, nurse manager, director, and did a small time as a CNO. I found my love of education and professional development and spent a lot of time educating in both academic and organizational areas. Currently, I have transitioned into a regulatory role as an RN program coordinator where I use all of those skills to ensure that the hospitals and the system are survey-ready at any time. My role is to prepare the organization for Joint Commission survey readiness. What I like to focus on is taking the elements of performance and the standards that Joint Commission and CMS require and linking them back to the areas that I cover to ensure that people understand the importance of why we need to be survey-ready. I like to do that because if they don't understand the why, it isn't important. I like the staff to understand that everything they do is part of ensuring that the patients get the right care at the right time for the right reason.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say that nursing just opens up an extremely large opportunity in a variety of areas, and so you don't have to just be focused on nursing. Once you're in healthcare, there's so many avenues that nursing has opened up for me, and I think if you remain curious and find a mentor, that's the best thing you can do as a young nurse.
