About Summer
Summer Johnson is a healthcare finance and revenue cycle professional with more than 25 years of experience, having built her career through progressive growth, dedication, and a commitment to serving the community. Beginning immediately after college in an entry-level patient registration role, she gained firsthand experience in patient access and insurance verification, then advanced to a unit secretary role and later to a role in pharmacy operations. Driven by a desire to expand her impact on healthcare organizations, she returned to school and earned her Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Healthcare Administration in 2020. She currently works in contract modeling and analytics, specializing in revenue cycle performance, reimbursement strategy, payer contract analysis, and financial reporting. Her work focuses on identifying opportunities to strengthen organizational financial performance, improve reimbursement outcomes, and support the long-term sustainability of healthcare services. Although her role is no longer clinical, she views her work as an important contribution to patient care and community health. By helping ensure the hospital's financial stability, she supports its continued ability to deliver essential services to the communities it serves. She is currently completing her doctoral studies in healthcare administration and expects to graduate next spring, with her dissertation serving as the final requirement. Her research focuses on revenue cycle management as a strategic capability for improving financial stability in rural hospitals. As an active member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), she remains committed to professional development and advancing best practices in healthcare finance. She is also dedicated to community service and philanthropy, recently completing the American Cancer Society's 100-Mile Challenge to help raise funds and awareness for individuals and families affected by cancer. Through her combined experience as a healthcare professional, financial strategist, researcher, and community advocate, she aims to continue advancing healthcare organizations and the communities they serve.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to resilience, hard work, and adaptability. Throughout my life and career, I have learned the importance of staying committed during challenges, working hard, and adapting to the constant changes in the healthcare industry. I refuse to take failure or rejection personally. I use it as a springboard for redirection.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have received is to treat everyone with the same level of respect and to never try to be the smartest person in the room. There is always something to learn from others, and strong relationships and humility are essential for growth and leadership. I also try to remember that when things go wrong, start looking around your own feet first.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would encourage young women to think outside the box and approach every problem from a different lens. Healthcare is constantly evolving, and innovation often comes from challenging traditional ways of thinking and bringing fresh perspectives to complex issues. It is essential to learn balance, but remain assertive as well.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
A few of the biggest challenges in healthcare finance right now are the ever-changing rules and regulations, unfavorable payer mixes, and ongoing payer policy updates. At the same time, these challenges create opportunities for organizations to become more strategic, innovative, and efficient in managing operations and revenue cycle processes.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
My faith in God is the most important value in both my work and personal life. It guides how I treat others, make decisions, and handle challenges with integrity, compassion, and perseverance.
