Her Story

About Sunita

My journey began with a Bachelor's of Architecture, which planted the seed of confidence in my life and taught me creativity - how to create things depending on space and surroundings. That education gave me complete confidence in myself, and I learned that education is not just education, it's your knowledge and wisdom. After having kids, I had a career break, and getting back to my original architecture roots was very different and hard. But the confidence from my education stayed with me - I realized it's not about age or numbers, it's about what you have in you. I moved into IT when it was booming, studying the entire coding part, which was completely new knowledge. I'm a person who draws things, who is into the creative world, and jumping into coding was a completely different perspective of thinking. But I took that challenge well. The highlight is that I not only studied coding myself, but I supported other ladies who had career breaks - ladies who migrated from outside and didn't know what to do or how to start. These were ladies at home who cook, take care of kids and family, and it was hard for them to find time for themselves. I took them through Java classes because I've been through those struggles and I know how to put things on the plate so they can grasp and move forward. Today they are all placed in jobs, and I feel so proud of them. The most challenging part of IT is that every day brings changing phases - when I started, it was moving towards automation, and now it's the AI world, which is a complete revolution that happened in maybe 2 years. I'm now helping ladies understand AI, writing things that everybody can learn and understand, not in pro language but for people who really want to do things but don't know where or how to start. I guide them one step at a time, and they realize they are there already. The more you teach, the more you learn and get clarity.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

When people start, especially for women, there will be lots of people who will say 'do you really need it?' or 'do you really want to struggle such a lot of time?' Especially if you're financially sound, nobody's going to support you for your career part. But you need to face that - it's not always being in someone's shadows. You need to have something for yourself. You cannot always be a plant - there will be a day when a plant turns into a tree, and you need to be recognized at that time. You are a tree not only for your kids, you can be a tree to your society also. You should not let age or numbers prevent you from choosing your ladder and starting to move up. It's not about being at the top by 30 - I chose my ladder at 40 and decided which ladder I should be on, then started moving up. The important thing is to bring hope to people around you and show them that they can still do it.
