Surabhi Barbhaya, AICP, LEED AP, is a seasoned urban planner and design professional with over 20 years of experience spanning urban planning, urban design, and active transportation. Currently serving as a Practice Builder in Long Range Planning at Kimley-Horn, she has contributed to a wide array of projects including general plans, specific plans, vision plans, objective design standards, zoning code updates, complete streets, and bike and trail master plans. Her expertise lies in integrating land use, transportation, and sustainable development to create plans that respond effectively to demographic, economic, and organizational trends.
With a strong background in architecture and urban design, Surabhi emphasizes aesthetics, placemaking, and community-centric solutions in all her projects. She is particularly passionate about meaningful public engagement, believing it fosters consensus and a sense of ownership within communities. Her dedication and innovative approach have earned her recognition through numerous local and state awards from the American Planning Association (APA) and the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA).
Having lived and worked internationally, Surabhi brings a global perspective to her work and is an active member of the APA. She has also served as a board member for both the St. Louis and Orange County Chapters of the American Planning Association. Through her leadership and expertise, she continues to shape resilient, sustainable, and vibrant communities while mentoring the next generation of planners and designers.

What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my parents, whose guidance and example instilled in me a strong work ethic from an early age. I also owe a great deal to my supportive husband, friends, and family, whose encouragement and belief in me have been invaluable throughout my journey.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received is to stay open to different opportunities and to approach my work with a sense of curiosity and enjoyment. Embracing new experiences has allowed me to grow in ways I never anticipated.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this industry is to stay open to new opportunities and to give your best effort, no matter how big or small the task. Every experience is a chance to learn, grow, and make an impact.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
There are many opportunities in my field, depending on your background and interests. One of the biggest challenges, however, is that it has traditionally been male-driven, which can present barriers. Additionally, the field is so diverse that it can be difficult to focus on one specific area, making it important to find your niche and carve your path.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The most important values to me in both my work and personal life are delivering high-quality results and maintaining a healthy balance between my professional and personal commitments. I believe that excellence in work goes hand-in-hand with well-being and fulfillment outside of the office.
