Her Interview
Ten minutes with Susan
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my career progression to disciplined listening, intentional networking, and surrounding myself with exceptionally capable colleagues from whom I could learn. Much of my development came from observing and absorbing the insights of senior leaders and consistently challenging myself to advance—from recruiter to recruiting manager and ultimately to senior manager.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I ever received was simple but powerful: be the first to arrive and the last to leave. It instilled in me the importance of discipline, commitment, and setting a standard for others. That mindset shaped my work ethic early on and reinforced the value of showing up fully, taking initiative, and demonstrating dedication through action.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Begin your career by seeking out a strong mentor. Within most organizations, senior leaders are willing—and often eager—to provide guidance, so identifying a capable mentor early on can be invaluable. Commit fully to your development and be prepared to put in the necessary effort. This work extends beyond a traditional schedule; approach your role with the mindset of owning your own business.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the most significant challenges in consulting today is the rapid pace of change—whether driven by technology, shifting workforce expectations, or evolving client needs. At the same time, these dynamics create meaningful opportunities. Organizations increasingly rely on consultants for strategic guidance, talent solutions, and specialized expertise, which elevates the value of strong advisory skills and deep industry knowledge. For those who can adapt quickly, stay current, and build trusted relationships, the field continues to offer substantial potential for impact and growth.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that guide me both professionally and personally are integrity, hard work, and respect for others. I believe in showing up fully, following through on commitments, and treating people with honesty and fairness. I also place a high priority on building meaningful relationships—listening carefully, supporting others, and creating an environment where people feel valued. Whether in my career or personal life, I strive to lead with authenticity, dedication, and a genuine commitment to helping others succeed.
