Her Story
About Susan
I started my own mobile notary business 2 years ago after being a notary for 10 years. I needed more flexibility in my schedule, and I wanted to use that flexibility to help people close on their houses and with estate planning. It's usually a happy time for most people, but it's a really important time too. My work is very appointment-based, but a lot of it is pop-up work - people calling and saying they need a notary in 2 hours. I'm available 7 days a week, 24-7, though I don't really get that many late night calls. I mostly do real estate transactions and estate planning. Before this, I worked in compliance and collections, but I've been in service for a long time. I just feel like everything is customer service, just the product changes. What I love most about my work is meeting the people - it's always an adventure. People are so diverse, and I always learn something or meet these wonderful people. I don't make it stuffy - I actually talk to them, not just stamp, stamp, stamp. The accomplishment I'm most proud of is starting my own business and seeing it start to grow.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't give up. It is a very - there's a need for it, and it can be rewarding, but it's not the kind of career that is going to make you a bunch of money right out the gate. But if you can put 2 or 3 years of work into it, you will start to see that benefit come back to you.
