About Susan

Susan Johnson serves as a senior loss control inspector and independent contractor in Shawnee, Oklahoma. She has worked in the loss control industry for about eight years, conducting inspections for clients including Sedgwick, SCI, Preferred, and National Safety and Risk. Johnson began her career in real estate as an agent in 1990, later advancing to area manager in subprime lending at Countrywide, where she gained expertise in people, property, and risk assessment. She entered loss control without prior knowledge and built her expertise through hands-on experience, research, and learning from mistakes. Johnson owns the Loss Control Training Academy and operates a YouTube channel under the same name to teach others the field. As a former single mom who put herself through college, she emphasizes paying it forward by mentoring inspectors and providing practical training. She attributes her success to supportive colleagues such as Ashley Eibling and Sabrina Royer at Sedgwick, along with her willingness to keep learning and pursue new opportunities despite initial fears.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Susan

01What do you attribute your success to?

The people that have helped me along the way, like Ashley and Sabrina at Sedgwick. Going forward even though I was afraid of failing. Keeping learning and being willing to walk through the next door when it opened. It takes a village and nobody builds a successful career completely by themselves.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Open their ears and close their mouth. Listen to what people have to say even if it doesn't come across cool or nice. Don't get defensive. Take the information and apply it where it works for you. The quicker you shut your mouth and open your ears, the quicker you're gonna learn.
