I've been working in financial services for 20 years, in the same position throughout my career. My typical day involves contacting people and letting them know what I do - helping families financially to eliminate debt, get better returns on their investments, be better prepared for retirement, have adequate life insurance coverage, get their wills and trusts in order, and basically learn some financial concepts that are not taught anywhere else. I graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor's degree in social work and a minor in child and family relations. While it's not in the field I'm in right now, all of that helps me to deal with people. For my training for my career, I just studied and passed tests, and then we have continuing trainings all the time from the providers of these products - either we can get training on a one-on-one basis, or in a group, or self-study. So just putting my nose to the grindstone and learning. What I consider my most notable professional achievement is providing life insurance, because that is so crucial. Somebody can have a great job and be saving for retirement and have everything lined up, but if they don't have life insurance and they pass away, then the whole plan is worthless. Everything changes in the moment. In our teaching of financial education, we provide families with a full financial picture without any charge, and most financial advisors can charge anywhere from $1,500 up for that time, but we don't charge anything for that.
