Her Story

About Susan

Susan Knight serves as Senior Director of the Medical Sciences Institute, a role she has held for nearly 16 years at the blood center. With over 30 years in healthcare, her career began after earning a bachelor's degree in nuclear medicine technology with a minor in chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. She worked as a nuclear medicine technologist, including at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, before transitioning to roles in a pharmaceutical company as labeling supervisor and professional services. Knight later led the development of independent pediatric imaging centers from the ground up, opening facilities in 2005 and 2008. She holds an MBA with an emphasis in marketing, completed in 2005. In her current position, she oversees apheresis and cell collections, a cell therapy lab, clinical trials and research, the Hemophilia Treatment Center, and pharmacy. Knight is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and has been nominated to the board of directors for the American Society for Apheresis. She attributes her success to the stamina and grit required in leadership roles, where the work is never done, and advises young women entering the field to take action on opportunities rather than waiting.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Susan

01What do you attribute your success to?

The work is never done in a leadership role. It takes a lot of stamina and grit to balance successes with busy times, especially after transitioning from patient care where work ends at the end of the day.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Take action instead of spending too much time just thinking about things. I've had opportunities but didn't always put them into action, so encourage moving forward without waiting.
