Her Story
About Susan
Susan Korea is a PhD student and Graduate Research Assistant at Miami University, where much of her work centers on research and teaching. With 9 years in the field of education, she founded the Young Achievers Youth Organization (YAIO) to support young women and girls who have dropped out of school by empowering them to become independent through vocational skills. Her research examines women empowerment, specifically exploring what girlhood looks like for Black girls in a racial society, including fieldwork observing mentoring programs for young girls around Cincinnati. Growing up in a society where women had limited leadership opportunities in science, humanities, and arts inspired her path. She is a member of the European Forum AFPAC and European Forum Out Sports, and has volunteered with organizations including Save the Children, World Vision, and Girls for Change.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Susan
01What do you attribute your success to?
Being authentic and being myself keeps me going because my work comes from the deepest part of me and I know what I'm called to do.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Being authentic and being myself is the greatest advice because in the field I meet skilled people doing better things, but knowing my work is authentic and matters keeps me going.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Know what you want, and keep going. If you really know what you want, it doesn't matter what orbiter calls you first. Just knowing what you want, and keep going no matter what you need along the way.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Being a woman trying to be a voice is a struggle every day as I have to prove that I am capable over and over again. As a Black woman, it's a second thing that I have to prove that I know what I'm doing and I am great.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Inner work, affirmations, prayer, self-care, working out to make sure I am okay before going out to others, and authenticity in my work.
