About Susan
I am an interdisciplinary artist, Fulbright Scholar, and tenured Professor of Art and Design whose creative practice spans painting, drawing, installation, sculpture, photography, moving image, public art, augmented reality, and emerging digital technologies. I have been a Professor at Suffolk University since September 1996, now for nearly three decades, where I teach drawing, painting, integrated studio practice, creativity, and innovation to students from both the College of Arts and Sciences and the Sawyer Business School, emphasizing design thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration, and real-world problem solving. My courses encourage students to move fluidly between traditional studio methods and contemporary digital tools, fostering experimentation, critical inquiry, and creative risk-taking, and through public art projects, community partnerships, and civic engagement initiatives, students learn to create meaningful work that extends beyond the classroom and into the public realm.
My professional work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and includes painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, moving-image projects, public art interventions, and research-based creative projects that connect art, technology, history, and community engagement. My work explores the intersections of culture, memory, place, identity, and collective experience, often transforming architectural and public spaces into immersive environments through site-specific installations and built-environment projects that investigate how art can reshape the way audiences experience and engage with space.
Earlier in my career, I served as Assistant Professor at Wellesley College for nine months, where I taught drawing, 2D design, and 3D design, and as Visiting Professor at Rhode Island School of Design for two months, where I served as Guest Critic in the Honors Program and Exhibition at Palazzo Cenci in Rome.
I hold an MFA in Painting from Boston University, where I was a St. Botolph Club Associate in the Arts, a Fulbright Association member, and involved in acting and dance, and studied Italian Studies at UCLA. I also completed a Short Program at MIT in Relativity, Gravity, and Cosmology.
Across my career in art, education, and interdisciplinary creative practice, my work has been driven by a commitment to exploring the intersections of art, technology, history, and community, and to inspiring students to think critically, take creative risks, and create work that engages with the world around them. Whether I am creating installations, teaching students, or engaging in public art projects, I bring a collaborative, experimental, and deeply curious approach that has made a lasting impact on the art world, my students, and the communities I serve. I am proud of the work I have done throughout my career and excited to continue pushing the boundaries of interdisciplinary art and education at Suffolk University and beyond.
