What sets her apart is her commitment to providing these services at no cost to families, making compassionate support accessible during overwhelming times.
In addition to her senior care work, Susan’s background includes experience in insurance services, healthcare screening, volunteerism, and community outreach. What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to determination and persistence. It hasn't always been easy, but I just continued and never quit. I think it's been ingrained in me since childhood to give back - as a child, I took care of my mother a lot, and I think that instilled in me this drive to serve others. I did home health care for a very long time and changed families' lives that way before I had to start taking care of my own family. I seriously think it's just ingrained in me to give back. My proudest moments come when somebody looks at me and says, 'I'm so glad I have you, I could not have done this without you.' That tells me everything I need to know - that I'm doing the right thing and I'm in the right place. Making families feel grateful that they have me, making their lives easier, that's what drives me to keep going.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
The advice I would give to young women entering this field is to have compassion and have empathy. Make sure that the patient is getting the best care that they can get from you. Have a high standard of care, and just do your best. You have to have a heart for people in general - you have to have empathy for people, you have to have compassion for people. In some cases, I have seen that sometimes people don't quite understand that, and it hinders them from being able to give the best care that they can give. This work has to be a passion that you have to serve other people.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges I see in my field is that you have to have a heart for people in general. You have to have empathy and compassion for people. In some cases, I have seen that sometimes people don't quite understand that, and it hinders them from being able to give the best care that they can give. When families first start this process of senior placement, they're very overwhelmed and they really don't know where to start. That's where the value of what I do comes in - helping families navigate that overwhelming process and making their lives easier. The opportunity is in being able to reach more families and make a difference in their lives. My goal is to have 5 to 10 placements a month where I'm changing families' lives and making lives easier for them. I can travel wherever I need to go to help a family, so the opportunity to serve families everywhere is really important to me.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me in my work are compassion, empathy, and having high standards of care. My key responsibility is making sure that families are being taken care of the best way I can and making their lives easier. I want to make a difference in everybody's life, whether I help them with senior placement, hospice and palliative care, in-home care, or home health care. In my personal life, I love spending time with my husband - we have an RV that we travel in and go places together. I enjoy spending time with my adult children. My daughter is an occupational therapist and lives in Charleston, South Carolina with her husband, and my son lives locally. I just love being able to spend time with them. I'm also looking forward to being a grandmother - my daughter is going to start having children next year, and I can't wait for that. Family is very important to me, and so is giving back and serving others.
