Her Story
About Susan
I've spent over 40 years in education, and it's been a wonderful journey that has truly fed my soul. I started as a K-6 elementary teacher and then became a reading specialist for many years at the middle school level in the Upper Darby School District. From there, I moved into leadership roles as an instructional coach and then assistant principal at the middle school level. I became principal of an elementary school in the Upper Merion Area School District, and because my passion is teaching and professional development for teachers, I was asked to do a lot of professional development for new teachers coming into the district. This led me to become director of curriculum and instruction, which then moved into an assistant superintendent position where I took on many roles - not just professional development, but developing and implementing curriculum, overseeing instructional practices and assessments, and serving as the federal grant coordinator overseeing the federal grants we received. After getting my doctorate at Arcadia University in Glenside, PA, I became an adjunct professor there, and I've been teaching there for 12 years now. I'm currently developing their new endorsement program for instructional coaches, as well as teaching educational leadership and a literacy course for aspiring teachers. I retired from the assistant superintendency on January 2nd, and since December 2025, I've been working as a consultant and principal induction facilitator. I'm very fortunate that what I do feeds me - I love what I do.

01What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
My family comes first to me, and I'm very fortunate that what I do feeds me. I truly believe in the work of cultural proficiency and moving districts toward a deeper understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion. I'm passionate about teaching and professional development for teachers, and I love embracing the diversity in our schools. In the Upper Merion district, we had over 65 languages spoken and a very large ESL population, and I'm most proud of the work I did with an amazing team to shift the staff's mindset and bring them to a beautiful place in terms of understanding cultural proficiency. I also believe strongly in recruiting and retaining teachers of color, which is why I present at conferences and work heavily with organizations like PEDC. My work with the Garces Foundation supporting immigrants reflects these same values of inclusion and support for diverse communities.
