Her Interview
Ten minutes with Susan
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to amazing mentors and especially my mothers with an S - my amazing mother who was my best friend, and the aunties and grandmas that poured into me from a huge family. It takes a village, and they laid the foundation before I met mentors outside the family.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Know your worth. Also, treat me like you prayed for me, and I'll treat you like God answered your prayers.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
You are enough, and you know enough. We always doubt ourselves, but you're good enough. Just recover from setbacks and go again.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge is that the field is still about 90% white males in their mid-50s and 60s. Very few African Americans, let alone females. We're still very underserved, and a lot of people don't push through or second-guess themselves. They need to be in that room, and their voice is very important.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
To be authentic, and really to treat my clients as I would want somebody to treat myself or my mother, especially when it comes to finance. Treat me like you prayed for me, and I'll treat you like God answered your prayers.
