Currently serving as Chief Executive Officer of my Freelance Healthcare Content Writing Business, Susan Wessman Enterprises LLC DBA Horizon Professional Services, since 2024. In addition, the author of Failure is an Option, to give hope and encouragement to others with difficulties they are encountering as I experienced or worse. Over the years, I have come a long way in learning how to speak, and provide material as a content writer for nurses or the public who have a desire to learn about their own medical issues. In order to learn as much as possible, I love to do research so I can be up-to-date with AI, technology, and all-things healthcare.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Susan

01What do you attribute your success to?

My God-given gift and the courage to keep going in spite of "I could have had an abortion and not had you". All good things come from God, not by my own power.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Become an author. My English professor sent me an email at the end of the English course semester telling me I needed to be an author, and how to accomplish it. He recommended a Writer's Kit for beginners, which i promptly purchased. I learned that the exact methods I was using to write was in that book. Everything I was doing, and methods used, I was already utilizing; I did not have to change anything - I was already there. It was a great relief to know I was doing it right. I also did not know until the end of the semester that he was using my essays as examples on how to write for the class.

During a final clinical in nursing school, we had to write an essay as part of our exam about what we learned and what we experienced working with nursing home residents. My instructor wrote me to tell me my essay was the best she had read and how much she enjoyed reading it - I got 100%. I graduated two weeks later.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Start out with correctional nursing. There is a ton of hands-on experience to be had with wound care (K-9 bites), chronic illness experience, and CPR experience (sadly). I started my career in Corrections. It was a total culture shock, but worth it. I went straight out of graduation (already had the job), to the prison. The best decision I made in my nursing career, besides working for ICE at the detention facilities.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The challenges I face now is finding clients. I love to write. I love to do research. I love to inform.

The biggest opportunities are clients. Content writing for freelance nurse writers is HUGE. But, any content writing is huge for other fields, not just healthcare.

The field is wide open - I just have to look and market in the right places. I am no longer a bedside nurse. I am a content nurse writer now. I want to take the experience I have and the knowledge I have obtained and share it.

Podcasts: I have two podcast, one is a devotional and one is for healthcare to share with the public. It is a huge challenge, and not doing well, yet. I have to find a way to get both found.

I want to save lives.....

I want to save someone's eyesight.....

I want to help those with sleep apnea...... with my writing.

I want the public to be aware of their body, be informed.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My Christian values. Learning God's Word. What the late Charlie Kirk did for the gospel, I want to continue. My faith is who I am, and I am not ashamed to wear it on my sleeve.
