About Sushma

Sushma Porika serves as a Principal Engineer Process Control, bringing more than eight years of experience across automotive and pharmaceutical manufacturing industries. She launched her professional journey in 2017 after earning a master's degree in electrical and computer engineering from Purdue University, following an undergraduate degree in electronics and communication. Early in her career she worked as a Controls Engineer for automotive manufacturers such as Ford and General Motors, where she developed strong skills in PLC programming and troubleshooting on production floors. She later transitioned into process controls engineering in the highly regulated pharmaceutical sector, mastering Delta V programming and SCADA systems while applying a cross-industry perspective to solve complex automation challenges. Sushma maintains active professional involvement as a senior member of the ISA and participates in WEN and the TEMP program, where she mentors junior engineers and engineering students. She previously served as a teaching assistant for the Awake nonprofit organization affiliated with Purdue University, supporting adult professional development. Her approach to success centers on leveraging rare cross-industry expertise in PLC and Delta V systems to apply innovative ideas drawn from multiple fields.

Ten minutes with Sushma

01What do you attribute your success to?

I have a cross-industry set up, like, because PLC and Delta V is very rare to have for just one person... I solve problems differently, and I apply different ideas and different taking the ideas from different field.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Do not be afraid. There are people who started in these careers and succeeding. Do not be afraid to tip into these, or also do not afraid to move to cross-functional industries. If there's an opportunity, you don't say no because you're a woman. Just get that opportunity, and go with it, and you'll learn, and you'll grow.
