Her Interview
Ten minutes with Suzan
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my passion and intensity for what I believe is right. When I am committed to a cause—especially in education and advocacy—I give it my full effort, often going beyond what is expected. That level of dedication has guided my work with students, families, and colleagues throughout my career.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Early in my career, I was told that I should consider becoming a counselor. Although I did not pursue that path, the advice has stayed with me as a reminder of the importance of listening, understanding others, and supporting people emotionally as well as academically. It continues to influence how I interact with students and families today.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would advise young women entering education to understand that prior knowledge and coursework cannot fully prepare you for the realities of the classroom. It is essential to be certain that teaching is truly your calling. Most importantly, I encourage educators to focus on transferring a genuine love of learning to their students by being engaging, enthusiastic, and passionate in their instruction.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in education today is teaching reading effectively, as many students struggle with decoding the “code” of language. This creates a strong need for evidence-based, multisensory instructional approaches that meet diverse learning needs. There is also a significant opportunity to strengthen teacher support systems and improve cultural responsiveness in instruction so that all students can succeed.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are helping others, advocacy, generosity, honesty, and transparency. I believe deeply in paying it forward and offering support whenever possible. Above all, I strive to act with integrity and to do what is right and just in both my professional and personal life.
