About Suzanna
Suzanna Hogue is a medical coder contracted with UnitedHealthcare, where she works on digitizing benefit documentation using CPT codes to help providers and patients determine coverage and prior authorization needs. She began her healthcare career over 20 years ago, starting in administrative roles such as check-in, check-out, and scheduling before advancing to AR follow-up and coding. After earning her CPC certification through AAPC eight years ago while working for an anesthesiology and pain management practice, she transitioned into AR auditing and now focuses on streamlining processes through technology. Suzanna holds an associate's degree in healthcare administration from 2008 and a bachelor's degree from 2010, both from the University of Phoenix. She is a member of AAPC and her local coding chapter in Concord. She attributes her success to God and values being a supportive team player while striving to be the best version of herself without obsessing over perfection. Her advice to young women entering the field includes obtaining the CPC certification first, pursuing specialized credentials like auditing or master CPC, and embracing travel to gain new experiences.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Suzanna
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to God. I would not be where I am today without him. I cannot look at the sky in that sunset, or a rainbow, or a storm and not believe. I know 100% that I am where I am because of him.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Not everything has to be perfect. When I took my coding test and scored a 94, someone told me 'That'd be perfect. Do you realize with a 94!' Anything in the 90s is fabulous.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Focus on learning and getting your CPC basic certification first. Then continue education for specialized certifications like auditing or master CPC. Travel and experience new things to push yourself. Always have something to look forward to.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Coding changes every single day so you must be adaptable and willing to learn daily. There is so much to know and insurance changes constantly. You are never bored because you are constantly learning and the way things are done changes frequently.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Family is important. Try to be the best person you can be. Always be patient and kind because you don't know what somebody else is going through. Spread kindness. Be the best employee and supportive team player. Strive to be the best version of yourself without obsessing over perfection.
