Her Interview
Ten minutes with Suzanne
01What do you attribute your success to?
I have an internal drive, maybe from my father. The emergency management field is so dynamic and constantly changing, which makes it exciting. I have an interest in the mission of helping people and keeping up with all the changes in this complex field. I like the complexity and the innovation that comes when trying to help people more efficiently.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Volunteering is key to get experience when you can't get a job without it. Volunteer with organizations like the American Red Cross or try to get an internship by calling a local office of emergency management. Get an education in the field. Networking is important - reach out to people to be a mentor or have an informational conversation, be honest about building your network, come prepared with questions. Especially in this traditionally male-dominated field, come prepared to ask questions about why they got into the field.
