Her Story
About Suzanne
Suzanne Cheryl Booth wears several hats.
She feels that responsibility, attention to detail, communication, and creativity make up the core of who she is.
Suzanne was raised in a Deaf household - her parents, siblings, and grandparents were all deaf. As the oldest child and also the one who could hear, Suzanne facilitated communication with the hearing world and was responsible for ensuring that matters surrounding her family ran smoothly. As a 7-year-old, she interpreted for her parents when they bought a home. Sitting beside "the man" she would sign the words he said. If she didn't understand the word, she asked him to spell it and she, in turn, fingerspelled it to her parents.
After graduating, she started working as a secretary then moved into being an administrative assistant to a director of marketing. In that position, she generated multiple contracts daily but grew tired of the repetitive nature of the contract generation. Using a word processing program (WordPerfect) and a flat file database (dBase II), she developed a application which allowed the generation of contracts using stored modules selected from a menu. Her manager recognized this programming effort and sent her to Oracle classes to learn programming and the ins and outs of the Oracle database and thus began her career as an IT professional consultant. As a consultant, she's been privileged to work various roles excelling as a Data Specialist, PLSQL and Oracle Developer, BI Analyst, and Technical Writer.
Alongside her professional endeavors, she also expresses her creative side with her work in the Society for Creative Anachronisms aka SCA (http://www.sca.org), an international non-profit organization devoted to research / recreation of pre-17th century skills, arts, combat, and culture. She focuses on the Italian Renaissance in areas like Feasting and Ambiance, Clothing Reconstruction, Calligraphy, and Manuscript Page Reproduction. In addition to being a mentor for others in the organization, she has held roles like society-wide sign language coordinator, event coordinator, head chef, local group president, newcomer liaison, and teacher. Outside of the SCA, she is a freelance artist, personal chef, and (as a CODA) has a deep love of American Sign Language.
