Her Story
About Suzanne
I've been in my field for over 15 years, and my journey has been shaped by faith, family, and determination. I graduated from John Tyler High School in 2004 and went on to Texas College, where I majored in business administration and religion. I graduated as valedictorian with a perfect 4.0, and I was blessed to be a United Negro Scholarship Fund recipient for all 4 years, as well as receiving the Presidential Scholarship. After that, I earned my Master's in Business Administration from Texas Southern, and I'm currently working on my Doctorate in Business Administration with a focus on healthcare. Today, I wear multiple hats. I work in healthcare doing the insurance portion, making sure those who are eligible for insurance are signed up and can receive those benefits, and if they aren't eligible, I go in and find them some type of coverage so they can get the necessary help they need, like doctor's appointments. I'm also a business owner - I own S&J Custom Shirts and More, which has been successful for about 6 years now. Additionally, I work for Texas College as a residence manager, where I focus on the housing portion of the school. We represent the college and see the day-to-day operations of the students, making sure they're attending classes, talking with them about their future goals, and ensuring they're in a safe environment. Working at Texas College is my most notable achievement because I feel like the students there, at this historically Black college, need to see their potential through me. I tell them all the time about how my mom could only offer me a prayer when I was growing up, and I want them to understand the history of Texas College and what it took for me to get there every day. I'm always going to be a proud alumni because we are more than just an HBCU - we are the people who graduate and go on to tell the story of what it takes to keep an HBCU's doors open.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Suzanne
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to God and my upbringing from my mom. Growing up, my mom was a single parent raising six children, and I was the youngest. She couldn't offer me much materially, but she gave me her prayers and taught me that even though we didn't have much, that didn't stop the way we dreamed. She always told us we still dream big, we still go and do what many people don't think we'll ever do, and we prove our naysayers wrong. My Christian background has shaped me in the most fundamental way because that's where the foundation was laid. I also have to credit my five sisters and the strong women in my church community who have been part of my upbringing, like Elder Orethia Mason, the late Darlene Lewis, Mrs Mary K. Roberson, Ms. Clara Dickerson, and Ms. Lois Bowie. All of these influences, rooted in faith and family, have made me who I am today.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Stay prayerful
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would say remain prayerful.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I would say raising awareness is the biggest challenge in both of my fields. In the insurance field, some people don't know all of the resources that are available to them. In the education field, I feel the same way - there's not enough awareness being raised as far as what the opportunities for students are, and it's because they just don't know. When I graduated high school, the first thing they did was push college, college, college, college. But now, I'm to a point where I'm not pushing college on anybody. I'm telling them, if you don't think that college is for you, go to trade schools, go find something to do. Because college is not something that is meant for everybody, and everybody doesn't want to be a teacher or anything like that. Some people really do want to be plumbers and things like that.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I feel like integrity is the most important value. But also respect - because it doesn't matter what your background is, everybody deserves to give respect and to be respected.
