Her Story

About Sylvia

I started my banking career as a teller in 1989. A wise and encouraging manager who also became a mentor, and friend throughout the years, encouraged me to pursue opportunities that not only challenge me professionally, but also allow me to grow, make a meaningful impact, and continue building a successful and rewarding career path. I continued to work at the local bank in customer service positions and also worked for a Japanese bank, Sumitomo Bank, in the Sears Tower in Chicago, which was an incredible cultural work experience. In 1996, I found my true passion when I was hired at a local community bank as a Mortgage Loan Officer/Underwriter. I spent seven years working as both a Loan Originator and Underwriter and promoted to Assistant Vice President of Mortgage Loans. I also enjoyed organizing and hosting 4-day Home Buyer Seminars in both Spanish and English and training branch management trainees in the mortgage lending department. For over 20 years as a Mortgage loan officer/originator, I have been passionate about helping individuals and families achieve the dream of homeownership through purchasing, building, and refinancing homes. I am committed to guiding clients with integrity, knowledge, and a genuine desire to make a lasting impact in their lives. My experience has allowed me to build strong relationships while helping clients navigate important financial decisions with confidence. For the most recent 2 years, I have been working for Centier Bank as a Community Lender and continue to work with people to achieve homeownership or get into a better financial position throughout Northwest Indiana. In addition to my mortgage career, I proudly serve as a Board member for the Home Builders Association of Northwest Indiana, where I have helped lead and grow industry events and community engagement efforts over the past four years. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to learn from exceptional mentors and leaders who encouraged me to continually grow, strength my skills, and pursue excellence. My foundation has always been built on integrity-putting my clients' best interest first and helping them achieve a stronger financial future, because I want people to be in a better financial position than when they came to me.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

One of the most meaningful pieces of advice was from a manager I deeply respected who encouraged me to never stop exceling-not just professionally but personally. He encouraged me to push beyond my comfort zone, keep learning, and always look for better and more creative ways to server others in my role. That advice has stayed with me throughout my career, helping me overcome fear, build confidence, and continue growing into the person and professional I strive to be.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

the most important advice I would give to women is to never stop learning, growing, and investing in themselves. Education, knowledge and continuous development are powerful tools that help women stand out and build confidence in industries that can often be challenging and competitive. Women bring incredible creativity, vision, resilience, and leadership to every role they step into. When we combine those strengths with ongoing learning and professional growth, there is truly no limit to what we can accoplish.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity is the foundation of everything I do. I believe doing the right thing, especially when it is not the easiest choice, is what truly defines strong character. In my career, ethics and honesty have always guided the way I serve my clients. My priority has never been simply closing a loan but helping individuals and families make financial decisions that truly benefit their future. I am deeply committed to placing people in the right loan programs for their unique needs. My goal is for every client to feel with confidence, trust, and the knowledge they were genuinely cared for throughout the process.
