Lockhart, TX 78644

Sylvia Mispagel is the Assistant Principal of Instruction at IDEA Public Schools, where she leads with a commitment to academic excellence, student growth, and instructional innovation. She began her journey in education in 2021 as a substitute teacher at IDEA, and after seeing the direct impact she could have on students, she transitioned into a full-time teaching role. Starting as a co-teacher and math interventionist, Sylvia’s dedication and effectiveness quickly led her to instructional leadership, where she now manages the English Language Arts (ELA) department. Under her guidance, the department achieved the number-one ranking in the Austin region, demonstrating her ability to translate data-driven strategies into tangible student outcomes.

Alongside her teaching and leadership roles, Sylvia completed a human resources internship with Encompass Hospice Care from 2021 to 2022, where she honed skills in organizational management and employee development. Her experiences have shaped her philosophy that impactful leadership multiplies influence: by coaching and supporting teachers, she creates ripple effects that elevate the learning experiences of all students. Sylvia’s approach combines high expectations, collaborative teamwork, and a focus on meaningful growth, fostering both teacher and student success.

Sylvia holds a Master of Business Administration from Texas Woman’s University and a Bachelor of Science in Applied Sociology with a minor in Healthcare Administration and Spanish from Texas State University. Looking ahead, she aspires to continue growing in educational leadership, with a goal of pursuing principalship in the next five years to further influence school culture and student achievement. Passionate about coaching, data-driven strategies, and creating opportunities for educators and scholars to thrive, Sylvia is committed to making a lasting impact on her school community.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I personally attribute my success to being able to make a difference in kids' lives and being able to help other teachers grow and meet their goals. I definitely have a track record of results - I manage an ELA department at my school, and our English department is number one in the Austin region. I'm very data-driven, but aside from the data, the impact on coaching my teachers to help them attain the goals that I had so much drive for as a teacher is huge to me. If I'm able to make a difference in kids' lives or help other teachers grow and meet their goals, then I consider that a huge success.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The advice I would give to a new leader in education is to not be afraid of innovation and doing something new. Just because it's not been done before doesn't mean it can't be done, and revamping systems doesn't mean it can't work. Our world is always changing, so I feel like new leaders should always be changing and revamping things along with our society as well.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me are loyalty, independence, growth and continuous improvement, and empathy. I think the last one, especially in times like this where we are in a world that's constantly changing, is always having faith in the good of people.
