Her Story

About Sylvia

I have been painting and creating art my whole life and have been in the art world for over 20 years. Professionally I have been putting out work for about 5 years. My current position as curator at the gallery is new, about 7-8 months, and I helped open the gallery as part of a team effort. I have completed several artist residencies, including being the first resident artist for University Circle in Cleveland, which is a cultural hub. I am also a practicing artist with my own studio where I create daily.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Sylvia

01What do you attribute your success to?

My team including God, my guides, ancestors, family, and friends who support me.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Don't stop. Keep going and keep working hard even when things feel like they are not progressing, because people are always watching and it pays off.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Do not be afraid to meet new people. Don't pay attention to industry norms about what female artists are supposed to do. Don't be afraid to take up space.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is always funding for artists, finding money for projects, supplies, and living between sales. The opportunity is that the field is wide open with many genres and ways to create your own lane and flourish.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Family is very important. Being kind to people when no one is paying attention. Doing things without expecting reward, believing in karma.
