Her Interview

Ten minutes with Sylvia

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my early experiences serving others, beginning with watching my mother as a missionary and later pursuing nursing. My passion for helping others learn, mentoring future leaders, and leading with transparency and integrity has shaped my career, while my experiences during COVID strengthened my commitment to succession planning and disability advocacy.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I received came from my mentor, Grace Mispoli, a nurse educator at Mount Sinai, who recognized my potential and supported me through my dyslexia diagnosis. Her guidance over 37 years taught me the importance of mentorship, advocacy, and using every opportunity to support others and advance the nursing profession.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I encourage young women to use their talents to help others, stay engaged, and seek opportunities to grow. Most importantly, support and uplift other women, build meaningful connections, and use your voice and experience to create opportunities for those who follow.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest opportunities in my field are to mentor others, advocate for those who need support, and continue making a meaningful impact through excellent patient care. I remain committed to working hard and serving wherever I am needed.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are service, compassion, advocacy, faith, and dedication. I was inspired by my mother’s example of helping others, which led me to nursing and a lifelong commitment to serving my community. I believe in supporting others, advocating for safety and inclusion, and approaching my work with passion, humility, and integrity.
