Her Interview

Ten minutes with Ta'Hisha LaWanda

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to resilience, faith, persistence, and a commitment to serving others. My journey—from customer service and support roles to the St. Louis Area Food Bank, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Wehrenburg Theaters and now AT&T—has taught me to embrace challenges and continually grow. Overcoming significant personal obstacles while pursuing my education strengthened my determination and belief in what is possible. I lead with compassion and empathy, always striving to understand others’ personal perspectives, and I believe that resolving internal challenges is an essential to becoming an effective leader.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Persistence is key, as well as keeping a calm demeanor as best as possible no matter the situation. Do your best to not allow anyone to dim your light or provoke you to act outside of your character.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering my industry is simple: don’t give up. Stay persistent, resilient, and have faith in yourself, even when the path feels uncertain. Believe that you are worthy and deserving of every opportunity, and remember that nothing beats failure like having the courage to try. Sometimes, you have to “fake it until you make it” by believing in yourself before others do.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Right now I feel like the sky is the limit from all of the amazing leadership as well as the dynamic speakers that I've met on a business level. I believe the sky is the limit and if you can believe it, you can achieve it. Someone once told me nothing beats a failure but a try, and that really has to be the mindset when taking on potentially new challenges to expand your horizons in a professional way as well as in your personal life.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Faith has always been my grounding point. Since having a great-grandmother who was an evangelist and actually brought people closer to their spiritual selves on a local radio station, I've come to understand that faith is number one in anything that you do.

The Good Book says faith without works is dead, and so with faith there must come the action in faith, knowing that the results will be as you imagine because you put in the work. I stand very high on morals and ethics, which is why I pursued two law degrees, just in the sense of knowing right from wrong. I'm sure at some point I'll become an advocate to empower people to really believe in themselves and achieve their best.
