Her Story

About Talia

Talia Goetting is an attorney and legal advocate with more than 22 years of experience focused on immigration, family, and adoption law. Her legal career began while she was in law school, when she served as a research assistant for a member of the U.S. House of Representatives who later became Senate Majority Leader. That experience led to research work with the Michigan Attorney General’s Office and ultimately to a position as an Assistant Attorney General. After starting a family, Talia founded her own law practice, which grew to include a partner, and later continued her commitment to vulnerable children and families through nonprofit work. She currently serves as a Staff Attorney with the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center, where she handles matters including asylum, removal defense, bond hearings, Special Immigrant Juvenile petitions, family-based immigration, waivers, appeals, and other complex immigration cases.

Throughout her career, Talia has combined courtroom advocacy with a deep commitment to helping people navigate some of the most difficult moments of their lives. She has completed approximately 100 adoptions, including complex interstate cases, and has successfully represented individuals facing deportation and removal from the United States. In one notable case, she helped a man who had lived in the United States for 13 years remain in the country, ultimately allowing him to build a life that included marriage, children, and a career. She has also been involved in exposing a major adoption scam that defrauded pregnant women and prospective adoptive parents of millions of dollars. Her dedication to public service has included work with organizations such as the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center and the Legal Aid and Defenders Association, as well as pro bono legal counseling for vulnerable populations.

Talia’s multidisciplinary background strengthens her approach to the practice of law. In addition to her Juris Doctor from Michigan State University College of Law, she holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a degree in Computer Information Systems, giving her a unique combination of analytical, technological, and people-centered skills. Outside of traditional legal practice, she has also worked as a podcast host and producer, helping build the Crimes and Consequences podcast into a widely followed media platform while developing expertise in research, content creation, marketing, and contract negotiation. Whether advocating for an immigrant facing removal, helping a family complete an adoption, or assisting someone who cannot otherwise afford legal representation, Talia is guided by hard work, determination, perseverance, honesty, and integrity. Her long-term goal is to build a reputable immigration law practice that combines strong advocacy with meaningful pro bono service to those most in need.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Talia

01What do you attribute your success to?

Hard work, determination, perseverance. Something is hard, you conquer it. You don't give up. There's always a solution or an argument that can be made.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Remember that being a lawyer is being an advocate. Even if you don't necessarily agree with all your clients' positions, they still have a right to have a strong advocate on their side. Everybody has a right to strong representation.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges are also the biggest opportunities. In immigration, everything is changing literally every day. The laws, the rules, the procedures are very dynamic. But it's also increased the need for good immigration attorneys to navigate these laws. It's very challenging but a really great opportunity for business and learning.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty and integrity. A lot of attorneys just make things up and will write it in a motion, and they know it's not true, but it gets stuck out there.
