Her Story

About Tamala

Tamala (Tami) Wilson is the General Manager of RDU MightyMaxx Limited LLC, MMaXXi, doing business as MightyMaxx Innovations, a manufacturer of Mobile Smart Towers and innovative connectivity solutions. She brings decades of experience in technology consulting, telecommunications, network engineering, and business development, with a particular focus on designing and deploying solutions for large public venues, enterprise organizations, and complex infrastructure environments. An interoperability engineer by profession, Wilson specializes in developing design solutions that integrate technologies from major manufacturers, helping organizations overcome compatibility challenges and connect systems that might otherwise be difficult to bring together. She describes her work as helping “square pegs meet round holes,” reflecting her ability to find creative solutions when others encounter technical roadblocks. Recognized for her specialized expertise, she is one of only five interoperability engineers in the United States, according to her professional background. Throughout her career, Wilson has held senior technical and leadership positions, including Chief Executive Officer of Flash Networks Group, Inc., Senior Solutions Architect at Govplace, and leadership roles with RFIP, Inc. Her experience encompasses network architecture, RF systems, satellite communications, microwave, distributed antenna systems (DAS), Wi-Fi, real-time location systems (RTLS), the Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence (AI) applications. At RDU MightyMaxx, she contributes to the development and commercialization of mobile smart tower technology that provides reliable, autonomous connectivity for large-scale events, remote locations, and mission-critical operations. Her technical knowledge spans leading networking platforms and manufacturers, including Cisco, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), Aruba, Ruckus, Extreme Networks, and ALE. Wilson earned an associate's degree in computer science through her studies at UC Berkeley and Oregon State University, with her listed UC Berkeley credential in Computer Systems Networking and Telecommunications. She has also completed numerous professional certifications and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) training programs, including Cisco, HPE, and Aruba programs, as well as CCIE-related training. In addition, she is affiliated with the Network Professional Association and Wireless MPA. Wilson attributes her success to persistence, determination, and a genuine passion for solving problems. She believes that being told something cannot be done is a reason to explore alternative approaches, think creatively, and keep working until a solution is found. Her customer-focused philosophy emphasizes listening with empathy and recognizing that customers are seeking help with genuine challenges rather than creating problems. She also encourages young women entering the industry to build strong foundational skills, develop their technical expertise, and navigate professional relationships thoughtfully. As AI continues to transform telecommunications and industrial technology, Wilson sees significant opportunities for innovation alongside the challenge of keeping pace with rapid change. Above all, she considers integrity and ethical decision-making essential, believing that professionals must remain true to their principles rather than compromise their values or take shortcuts. Through her combination of technical expertise, innovative thinking, and principled leadership, Wilson continues to help organizations overcome complex connectivity challenges and advance practical technology solutions.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Tamala

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to perseverance, determination, and my refusal to give up when faced with challenges. I find the process of exploring solutions and solving problems both exciting and rewarding, especially when confronted with something that seems impossible. When someone tells me no, it motivates me to look at the situation from a different perspective, explore alternative approaches, and find a way forward. I thrive on challenges and believe that obstacles are opportunities to think creatively, learn, and discover new possibilities. Ultimately, my success comes from my willingness to keep pushing forward until I find a solution.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received is to listen carefully and approach every customer interaction with empathy and understanding. When working with customers to find solutions, it is important to recognize that they are not trying to create problems; they are coming to you because they have challenges that need to be addressed. By taking the time to understand their concerns, acknowledging their perspectives, and listening without judgment, I can better identify their needs and develop effective solutions. I believe that building trust through empathy and active listening is essential to providing meaningful service, resolving problems, and establishing strong, lasting customer relationships.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to focus on developing strong foundational skills and building a solid understanding of the fundamentals. There is a significant gap in foundational knowledge across the industry, creating opportunities for women who are willing to learn, develop their expertise, and bring thoughtful solutions to the table. At the same time, it is important to navigate the industry strategically, build trusted professional relationships, and be mindful of how you communicate your perspectives publicly. Some industries can be challenging to navigate, and professional reputations matter. I encourage young women to remain confident in their abilities, continue strengthening their skills, and approach opportunities with both determination and sound judgment.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field right now is the rapid pace of change, particularly with the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The industry is evolving so quickly that it can be difficult for people and organizations to keep up with new developments, adapt their skills, and understand how to apply emerging technologies effectively. However, I see tremendous opportunities across the industrial sector and its interconnected industries, where AI can help address complex problems, improve processes, and drive innovation. Those who remain curious, embrace continuous learning, and recognize how to apply these technologies to real-world challenges will be well positioned to take advantage of the opportunities ahead.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in both my professional and personal life are integrity, honesty, and a strong commitment to ethics. This industry is constantly evolving, and there will always be situations where people may pressure you to change your position, compromise your principles, or take shortcuts to achieve a desired outcome. I believe it is essential to remain grounded in your values, stay true to yourself, and make decisions that align with your ethical standards, even when doing so is difficult. Ultimately, success means more than achieving results; it means accomplishing them the right way, maintaining the trust of others, and never compromising the principles that define who you are.
