Her Story

About Tamara

Tamara Woodward is a seasoned healthcare professional, author, and certified emotional health and wellness coach with more than 33 years of nursing experience throughout the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) region. Her career has spanned acute care hospitals, clinics, urgent care centers, physician practices, and community health settings, where she has provided compassionate, patient-centered care during some of the most critical moments in her patients’ lives. Her extensive clinical experience has given her a unique understanding of the emotional and physical challenges people face during times of crisis, change, and recovery.

One of the most transformative periods of Tamara’s career came during the COVID-19 pandemic while serving on the front lines at Howard University Hospital. Working on the COVID unit without a day off, she witnessed firsthand the profound impact the pandemic had on patients, families, and healthcare professionals. Seeking a way to process those experiences and give voice to the realities nurses faced, she began writing, which led to the publication of her books, including Nurse Norma Chronicles. Through her storytelling, Tamara has helped bring awareness to the resilience, sacrifices, and emotional challenges experienced by frontline healthcare workers.

Motivated by her passion for helping others navigate difficult transitions, Tamara founded TechU, a coaching and wellness practice focused on empowering individuals to move forward with clarity, confidence, and emotional resilience. As a Certified Emotional Health and Wellness Coach, she specializes in transition and decision-clarity coaching through emotional intelligence, emotional stabilization, and mindset reset strategies. She works with professional women, entrepreneurs, leaders, nurses, and women over 40 who are seeking meaningful personal and professional transformation. In addition to her role as a nurse at St. Coletta Public Charter School in Washington, D.C., Tamara leads virtual coaching sessions, plant therapy workshops, and aromatherapy experiences, including free community workshops hosted by the Laurel Branch Library for the past three years.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Tamara

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to just having a lot of trials in my childhood and going through difficult moments in my own life. I've had 3 husbands, and you go through so many difficult challenges as a kid growing up in the city whose parents didn't have much. If I have to say two words, it would be hunger and determination. I keep in the back of my mind that I can do it, even when people have said that because I haven't gone to college or don't have the education, I can't do a thing. Even with dyslexia, I find that I can do it. I can't do many things at the same time, but if I put my mind to one thing and try to complete that or do as much as I can with that for the moment, and then pick up something else, then I find that I can do it.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

You can do it. And forwards, I guess, that would be the best advice I can receive, you can do it. People have said because you haven't gone to college, or you don't have the education, or you can't do a thing. But I keep in the back of my mind that I can do it. I know it's not deep or anything, but truly, that has been the best advice. I can't do many things at the same time, but if I put my mind to one thing, and then try to complete that, or do as much as I can with that for the moment, and then pick up something else, then I find that I can do it. Even with dyslexia, I find that I can do it.
