Her Story
About Tameka
I have been in education for over 25 years. I started as a teacher right out of college at DeKalb County Schools after someone suggested I would be great with children instead of pursuing psychology. I progressed through roles like department chair, lead in the county, assistant principal for over 12 years, and now principal at an elementary school, going into my second year. The most rewarding part is seeing the impact on students, helping them grow academically, socially, and emotionally, and building their confidence.

01What do you attribute your success to?
My success comes from my family, parents, husband, children, sisters, immediate family, good friends, and best friends who are present and provide balance in my life.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have received is to always bet on yourself. Always believe and bet on yourself because you have everything inside of you and whatever you need to succeed is already inside of you.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice would be to follow your heart and do what's best for children. Always do what's best for children.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The greatest challenge in the education field is the perception that working with children is not rewarding. The biggest opportunities are the possibilities to change society and how we treat one another, potentially creating a better world if we do our job right.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I value integrity and being a person of your word. If I say something, I have thought about it and will do it. I also value people being their true self, being honest and original, and especially what you do behind my back when I'm not looking.
