About Tameka

Tameka L. Tate, LPC-S, is a licensed professional counselor and supervisor, mental health therapist, and author dedicated to providing compassionate, effective, and individualized behavioral health support. Based in the Greater Houston area, she currently serves as an EAP Triage Counselor with Magellan Health, where she provides immediate support and helps individuals navigate mental health challenges. Since beginning her counseling career in 2014 and obtaining full licensure in 2016, Tameka has developed extensive experience in crisis intervention, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, solution-focused therapy, and group counseling. Her professional background includes supporting children, adolescents, young adults, and individuals from diverse backgrounds through challenging life circumstances.

Tameka earned a Master of Arts in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling from Prairie View A&M University and a Doctor of Education in Counseling Psychology from Argosy University. Throughout her career, she has remained committed to helping individuals feel heard, develop healthier relationships, and build the confidence needed to make positive life choices. Her dedication to mental health advocacy is deeply rooted in her own life experiences and her desire to become the supportive person she needed during her childhood. In addition to her counseling work, Tameka founded CAMO Center LLC, which stands for Courage, Ambition, Motivation, and Opportunity. Through this initiative, she distributes food, toiletries, and essential supplies to individuals experiencing homelessness in downtown Houston. She is also developing community-based initiatives, including Walk and Talk Therapy and Bike and Breathe Therapy, to promote accessible mental wellness and support teenagers transitioning into adulthood.

Beyond her professional responsibilities, Tameka is an author who uses storytelling to encourage understanding, resilience, and self-acceptance. Her first book, Mommy and Me, a Micro Preemie, reflects her family's experience with her son's premature birth and remarkable journey of survival. She is also developing a children's book titled My Scar Saved Me, which aims to help children embrace their differences and recognize the strength behind their personal challenges. Her son's resilience continues to inspire her commitment to helping others overcome adversity. Guided by compassion, perseverance, and service, Tameka strives to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and families while expanding access to mental health resources within her community.

Ten minutes with Tameka

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my parents, especially my father, whose dedication and hard work taught me perseverance. Making him proud has always motivated me, while my challenging childhood inspired me to become the person I needed growing up. Today, my greatest motivation is my son, whose fight for survival as a micro-preemie continues to remind me of the strength, resilience, and purpose that drive me forward.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women is to silence the noise around them and overcome the self-doubt that can hold them back. Take time to understand what you truly want from your career and what will make you happy waking up each morning. Follow your own path rather than trying to please others or conform to family expectations. Your career should reflect your passions, values, and aspirations.
