Ten minutes with Tamica

01What do you attribute your success to?

Rooted in Faith, Family, and Resilience

I attribute my success to my upbringing. I didn’t come from a wealthy family, and as the oldest of three, I often helped my mother care for my younger siblings. I didn’t grow up with all the great things in life, but that experience shaped me. It taught me gratitude, responsibility, and resilience — qualities that guide me now as a wife and a mother. I am truly blessed, and everything I do is not just for myself, but for my family.

My greatest inspiration was my grandmother, a mother of thirteen and the embodiment of a Proverbs 31 woman. She was my rock. Her strength, her unwavering faith, and her belief in what was possible showed me that no matter where you start or what you endure, you can rise. You can overcome. You can accomplish anything by the grace of God.

Her example lives in me. It fuels my work, my service, and my commitment to lifting others. My journey is a reflection of the values she instilled — faith, perseverance, and the courage to keep going.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Learning, Growing, and Being Ready When Opportunity Calls

The best career advice I ever received came from my former supervisor when I transitioned from the medical field into the business world. I was shy, unsure of how to get involved, and still finding my voice. She told me, “Learn all you can. Soak in everything. You never know who’s watching you.”

That advice became the foundation of my career.

When I worked at the Greater Beaumont Chamber of Commerce as the Executive Assistant to the Chamber President, I made it my mission to learn everything I could. I paid attention, asked questions, and took every opportunity to grow. Later, when I transitioned to the Beaumont Fire Department as the Executive Assistant to the Beaumont Fire Chief, I carried that same mindset with me stay curious, stay teachable, stay ready.

Then one ordinary day, as I sat at my desk, I received a call that changed my life. Someone from ExxonMobil reached out and said they wanted to hire me. It felt like a blessing, but it was also a reminder: people notice your work long before you realize it.

That moment of recognition, rooted in service, consistency, and excellence, opened the door to my career at ExxonMobil.

I didn’t chase visibility. I focused on learning, serving, and showing up with integrity. And in the end, the blessing of opportunity found me.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Believe, Pursue, and Take Your Seat

Continue to believe that you can accomplish anything. My mom used to always tell us growing up that you can be anything you want to be in life, but it doesn't take much to be a dummy. You have many options, but failure isn't one of them.

You have to pursue, you have to connect with not just the right people, but just connect with people in general, because you never know who's watching you, you never know who's looking and seeing what potential you might have for your next career. We still have a seat at the table, no matter if it's an all-man dominant industry. We have a place in every seat in any industry that we pursue.
