Her Story
About Tammy
Tammy Smith serves as Assistant Manager at O'Reilly Auto Parts, where she has worked for 4 years after accumulating a total of 10 years in the automotive parts field. In her role, she provides customer service by helping clients find the right parts for their vehicles, manages paperwork to keep the store running smoothly, and guides other team members. Prior to her current position, she worked as a Certified Pharmacy Tech, in vision centers, and at an ice cream shop for children. She earned an Associates in Business Administration from Navarro College and has learned much of her automotive expertise on the job, noting that O'Reilly's supportive environment helped advance her career after a previous role offered limited growth. Outside of her professional work, Tammy has been a dedicated volunteer firefighter for 15 years, an interest sparked when she assisted with a pasture fire near her home. She attributes her success to the unwavering support of her husband, with whom she has been married since 1999. Tammy advises perseverance in the face of challenges, such as some customers initially bypassing her expertise in favor of less experienced male colleagues, and encourages young women entering the industry to remain positive, strong, and true to what they know is right.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Tammy
01What do you attribute your success to?
The support of my husband. We've been married since 1999, 27 years. Love, trust, and we both support each other. There's good times, there's bad times, you just gotta work your way through them.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Do your best, do what you know you're supposed to do, and just keep going. Stand up and just keep going even with setbacks.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be positive, be strong, and if you know what's right, do it. Don't let the ones that don't listen just roll off your back, and don't let them bother you or get in your head.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
In automotive, some gentlemen don't think I have the knowledge that I have. They bypass me and go to a younger guy who may be newly hired. But when they have to turn and ask me, it feels really good, and they come back straight to me.
