Her Story

About Tamy

I have been working in student services and admissions for about 20 years. Before joining Kean University, I spent 8 years as an admissions director at the Paul Mitchell Schools, working in the beauty industry with cosmetology programs. I always wanted to make the switch into higher education and academia, so I went back to school while working and earned my bachelor's degree in Leadership and Professional Studies from William Paterson University and my master's degree in higher education administration. I've been at Kean University for the past 2.5 years now, which I absolutely love. Throughout my career, I've always been student-focused, working in various roles including career services helping students obtain jobs and internships, admissions counselor, and administrative assistant. My main area of expertise is admissions, assisting families through the enrollment process. I'm very student-centered and problem-solving is one of my strong skills. I'm good at building relationships, making connections, and networking across different departments. My typical day varies by season - in early fall, I'm attending career fairs and recruiting events, and later in the year I focus more on one-on-one connections with students, guiding them through the enrollment process. Coming from a low-income family, growing up in public housing with immigrant parents, I'm passionate about giving back and being a role model to students who are dealing with the same struggles I dealt with. It's rewarding to know that I made it and now I can help someone else make it this far too.

Ten minutes with Tamy

01What do you attribute your success to?

I’ve always had a strong internal drive to want more for myself and for my family. Growing up with humble beginnings shaped me—it created a deep determination to do better, achieve more, and open doors that once felt out of reach. That drive isn’t just about personal success; it’s about creating opportunities for my children, being a positive example for my family, and helping others from similar backgrounds see what’s possible. Striving for growth, impact, and purpose is what keeps me going every day
