Her Interview

Ten minutes with Tanesha

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a combination of consistency, adaptability, and relationship-building. I also believe a big part of my success comes from resilience and discipline. I have never relied solely on talent or credentials; I have consistently been willing to do the work, learn new areas, and evolve as industries and expectations changed. Whether working in government, higher education, fintech, or corporate governance, I have learned how to balance legal risk with practical business solutions, and I think that ability has been a major contributor to my growth. In-house legal roles especially require you to be agile, collaborative, and commercially minded, and I have worked hard to strengthen those skills over time.

Another thing I attribute my success to is emotional intelligence and authenticity. People want to work with attorneys they trust and can communicate with comfortably. I have been able to build strong cross-functional relationships because I approach people with professionalism, empathy, and a solutions-oriented mindset rather than just saying ‘no.’ And personally, I would say my success is also rooted in purpose. I have always wanted to create opportunities, stability, and impact — not just professionally, but for my family and community as well. That motivation keeps me focused and ambitious even during challenging seasons.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received was to always reach back and pull up the people coming behind you. That mindset has stayed with me throughout my career because I know firsthand the impact mentorship, advocacy, and opportunity can have. There were people who opened doors for me, offered guidance, and believed in me at pivotal moments, and I have always felt a responsibility to do the same for others. Success is meaningful, but it’s even more meaningful when you use it to create pathways for someone else. I believe part of true leadership is making sure the next person has access, encouragement, and the confidence to grow beyond where you started.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Move boldly and come to the table as your full self — unapologetically. Confidence does not mean having all the answers; it means trusting that you belong in the room and that your voice carries value. Be willing to speak up, ask questions, and take on opportunities even before you feel completely ready. Growth often happens in the stretch.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges, and at the same time one of the greatest opportunities, in the legal and corporate space right now is AI. It’s truly a double-edged sword. On one hand, AI is transforming the way organizations operate by increasing efficiency, streamlining workflows, enhancing data analysis, and changing how legal and business teams approach problem-solving. On the other hand, it raises important questions around governance, privacy, compliance, intellectual property, risk management, and ethical use. I think the professionals and organizations that will be best positioned moving forward are the ones willing to learn it, understand it, and help shape how it is implemented rather than resisting it out of fear. AI is not going away, so the focus should be on responsible innovation and thoughtful integration. In many ways, this moment is similar to other major technological shifts we have seen; the people who stay curious, adaptable, and proactive will be far better prepared for the changes ahead.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty is the value that anchors everything for me, both professionally and personally. In my work, it shows up as integrity in decision-making, transparency in communication, and consistency between what I say and what I do.
